Martin Cooper (né le 26 décembre 1928 à Chicago) est considéré comme l'inventeur du premier combiné portable et la première personne à effectuer un appel sur un téléphone cellulaire portatif.
La petite histoire : Le 3 avril 1973, Martin Cooper, alors directeur général de la division communication de Motorola, est à la fois excité et anxieux. Dans la rue, à quelques pas du Hilton de Manhattan, à New York, il tient dans la main un curieux objet, volumineux comme une brique, lourd comme un PC portable et muni d'une antenne longue de 10 cm. Avec ce terminal, qu'il a conçu de toutes pièces avec le soutien d'une équipe de sept personnes, il s'apprête à effectuer le premier appel téléphonique en extérieur sans être dans une voiture. Il choisit comme destinataire de l'appel Joel Engel, son rival et néanmoins respecté confrère chez Bell Labs, le bras armé de la recherche et développement de l'opérateur AT&T de l'époque. L'expérience est un succès. L'idée du téléphone portable devient une réalité. On dit que c'est en voyant le capitaine Kirk parler dans son communicateur (série télévisée Star Trek), qu'il fut inspiré, et qu'il se décida à faire des recherches en téléphonie mobile.

La théorie des Six M / cinq M est largement citée dans la littérature et les applications de télécommunications utilisées par la plupart des grands acteurs de l'industrie. Nokia est actuellement le plus grand fabricant mondial de téléphones mobiles, avec une part de marché d'environ 40% en 2008.
